One of the main polyphenol groups with up to 60 % of the total polyphenol content are proanthocyanidins (PA's). These compounds gained increased interest as reference Standards due to understand and compare their antioxidant capacity and possible benefits to human health. Isolation and purification of individual oligomeric PA's is required, because most of the substances beyond a degree of polymerisation (DP) of 4 are not commercially available. However, oligomeric cocoa polyphenols were separated and fractionated based on their DP using normal phase liquid chromatography. The purity of each fraction was accessed using reversed phase liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.
