During 2003, Cryovac Europe launched a series of seminars at Packforum, its European customer centre that is located near Paris, France. In October 2004, it ran a market-specific event on case-ready packaging. Here, we offer a summary of the salient points made by some of the speakers attending the seminar. Overall, beef and veal consumption has largely recovered from the food crisis associated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), except in Germany. There is no significant long-term growth in pork consumption, and poultry consumption is slowed through a production shortage. However, global demand looks stable, with very little growth. In fact, according to Cyovac the meat industry in the European Union (EU) is in serious financial difficulty, under pressure from imports, high costs and diminished competitiveness abroad because of the strong euro.
