Selig has underlined its new capabilities in creating a hermetic seal on glass by-winning an Alufoil 2019 trophy - an award judged by a senior packaging technologist at Marks & Spencer (M&S). GlassFuze was the "first and only" induction heat seal (IHS) technology to form a reliably hermetic seal between the liner and glass "no matter the oil or fat content of the product", the company claimed. This allowed manufacturers using glass to replace metal lids (and sometimes rubber gaskets) with aluminium foil seals and a lighter cap, said Selig marketing and service director Darren Dodd. "The paraffinic and micro-crystalline waxes commonly used on foil to create the heat-seal bond would fail EU food-contact regulations, due to the very low acceptable migration limits on paraffmic wax," he told Food Manufacture. Heading Alufoil's panel of judges was Laura Fernandez, senior packaging technologist at M&S. "[The system] can be regarded as a major breakthrough," she added.
