There could be shocks on the way for many food and drink manufacturers, judging by their responses to new environmental regulations. Some observers say that many firms have buried their heads in the sand in the run up to new pollution prevention and control (PPC) legislation regulating emissions to air, land and water, for example. Neil Johnston of the environment consultancy Alpheus says that preparing an application for a PPC permit for large sites could take a year but that, for example, by late June one client had still to begin work ahead of the end of August application deadline. Slaughterous-es and plants using animal raw materials should have applied by this month and plants using vegetable and dairy raw materials should apply between January and March 2005.
