Pest birds can be a major problem for all businesses, especially those involved in the preparation and/or distribution of foodstuffs. Although the words' pest control' are generally associated with rodents and insects, birds can also cause serious health and safety problems. This is especially true for those facilities located in and around concentrated urban populations, but for all sites there is a risk of food contamination. According to legislation food businesses must 'prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, the entry of birds and any risk of infestation by rats, mice, insects or other pests'.
