Usda Has Announced It Will purchase up to 88 million lbs. of potato and tomato products for donation to child nutrition and other domestic programs. This will include the purchase of up to 52 million lbs. of fresh and processed Russet Burbank potato products and up to 35.9 million lbs. of tomato products. The newly announced potato buy will bring this year's total to 128.6 million lbs., making it the second largest potato purchase in recent years. This is in addition to 76.6 million lbs. of fresh, frozen, canned and dehydrated potato products that USDA has already purchased in the current fiscal year, which began October 1, 2002. By comparison, last year USDA purchased 77.6 million lbs. of potato products. In fiscal 2001, with additional funds provided by Congress, USDA made 258.1 million lbs. of potato product relief purchases.
