Sport-specific footwear for active older adults: a preliminary biomechanical study

Despite an increasing number of older adults exercising regularly, many are forced to reduce or stop physical activity due to discomfort or injury. Previous research on footwear designs for older adults has tended to focus on populations that have been diagnosed with stability and mobility problems. The current work aims to take the first steps in evaluating footwear requirements for healthy active older adults. Following evidence that biomechanical measures such as ground reaction force (GRF) variables and lower limb joint angles are associated with the risk of injury (Nunns et al., 2016), and that differences in footwear have been found to influence these measures, it is important to quantify lower limb biomechanics for older adults performing sport and to investigate the role of footwear in influencing these biomechanical variables. Footwear design requirements will depend on the demands of the task, including the required traction and the level of loading associated with ground impacts. These requirements can be assessed by replication of sport-specific tasks over a force platform, using the utilized coefficient of friction (ratio of horizontal to vertical ground reaction force), and the peak magnitude and loading rate of vertical GRF.
