"We're going to be opening 200 to 300 stores globally in the next three years," C. Wonder founder Chris Burch said at his Manhattan flagship store in 2013 among racks of sherbet-colored preppy duds. Little more than a year later Burch-who split from his wife, fashion designer Tory Burch, in an acrimonious 2006 divorce-has announced plans to shutter every C. Wonder store. (The brand will maintain a modest Web presence.) A company spokeswoman cited "the highly competitive nature of the current retail environment"; Burch declined to comment. FORBES estimates that he's now worth some $950 million, down 21% from $1.2 billion in September. His wealth originates from having pocketed an estimated $550 million from selling part of his stake in his ex-wife's firm; he has also invested in startups, including digital fitness tracker Jawbone (see story, p. 64).
