Frank Gehry made his debut in Latin America this fall with the opening of Panama's new Biomuseo after 15 years of development-five more than it took to build the canal. The colorful, tilted-plane-jumble, show-stopper of a building puts the tiny isthmus nation at the center of some of the Earth's major turning points-the place where "the worlds collided," rejoining North and South America after 70 million years and forming a living bridge for species to cross between them. In the process, as the museum's two giant aquariums demonstrate, the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea went their very separate ways. Beyond celebrating the country's abundant biodiversity, Panama hopes the museum will evolve into a tourist destination like Gehry's Guggenheim in Bilbao.
