IMMIGRANTS HURT American society. Immigrants help American society. The current discussion over immigration runs to the hot and confused. Talk of Medicaid, language instruction, demographic charts and border crossing obscures the facts, and debaters on both sides tend to forget that immigrants, even the unskilled, contribute to economic growth. Similarly intense discussions raged in the 1920s. Our schoolbooks suggest that the WASP Republican Party succumbed to bigotry and shut out many productive workers, thereby hurting the rest of the country.
