Only Publix employees can buy its shares, but there are plenty of other supermarkets in which to invest. It's a hot sector right now, thanks to low interest rates, rising employment and reinvigorated deal activity. Shares of Kroger, the largest traditional U.S. grocery chain, are up 49% so far this year, while Safeway has jumped 47%. Regional chains have seen even bigger gains as larger players look to snap up smaller stores.
