When the government of zimbabwe denied her husband, Strive Masiyiwa, a mobile telecom license in 1992, Strive sued the Mugabe regime. Tsitsi prayed, promising God that if her husband got the license, she would take care of some of Zimbabwe's 1.2 million HIV orphans. The license was granted in late 1997, and Strive's Econet Wireless now has operations in several African countries, with its Zimbabwean operation publicly traded. His stake in the telecom group is worth an estimated $600 million, enough to rank him 32nd among Africa's richest. Tsitsi kept her promise: Since 1998 the Masiyiwas' Higher Life Foundation, with a 120-person staff, has spent millions of dollars to educate, provide food and teach life skills to 40,000 "History Makers"-a name her foundation uses instead of "orphans." "We see ourselves as parents," says Tsitsi. "We've built 'History Makers' into a name that is associated with a bright future, standing out and excellence."
