Two things enabled THK CO., LTD., to withstand the impact of the earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, and the ensuing nuclear meltdown: a meticulously crafted business continuity plan, or BCP, and swift, resolute action to put the plan into effect. Akihiro Teramachi, President and CEO of THK, was away on a business trip the day the disaster struck. Even so, by rapidly implementing procedures set forth in THK's BCP manual, senior executives on the scene took effec tive action to address the situation. The response was a convincing demonstration of the effectiveness of THK's crisis management system and of the success of Teramachi's efforts to promote crisis awareness.
