What matters in picking an exchange-traded fund? Let's assume you have picked the category you want exposure to (the S&P 500 or smallcompany stocks or long-term bonds or whatever). Then three things matter: costs, costs and costs. More precisely: fund management costs, trading costs and cost reductions from securities lending. Those three go into the formula for our ETF rankings, which feature best buys in each of nine categories.
