Similarly, Tesla Motor's CEO, Elon Musk, tells FORBES that he based the company in the Bay Area-despite the fact that he and his other company, SpaceX, are situated in southern California-because of local manufacturing know-how. It has made car people out of hires from Apple and Google Tesla's manufacturing chief, Gilbert Passin, has completely refitted a factory that once built Pontiacs and Toyotas and now makes the company's envy-inducing all-electric cars. Tesla bought the plant for $42 million in 2012 and picked up more equipment for pennies on the dollar from ailing Rust Belt manufacturers.
