Before big data, quantitative analysts-now referred to as data scientists-typically sampled data from larger sets and prepared it for analysis. This process took place at what today would be considered a leisurely pace. As the capability of platforms increased with faster speed, enormous volumes of data and ever-decreasing degrees of latency, the methodology of quantitative analysis changed. ParAccel is a relational database that was designed from the ground up to provide lightning-fast analytics on very large-scale data. ParAccel employs similar concepts to other analytical databases, such as columnar orientation, data compression, massively parallel processing, an in-memory option, and the ability to scale across commodity servers.
