Krlshnan knows the value of education: A scholarship from the Colombo Plan, a social-development nonprofit, paid for his undergraduate degree at Australia's Melbourne University. Now the telecom mogul is focusing his fortune on developing talent in his home country, donating tens of millions of dollars to scholarships, school programs and endowments. Some of these causes are especially personal for Krishnan, including Project Ilham, a fund that helps underprivileged students from Malaysia's Tamil minority, who are often hindered by linguistic and cultural differences. Krishnan himself is of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. Outside of education, the satellite and cell-service tycoon gives generously to the arts, sports, health care and humanitarian causes.
