I wasn't born near the sea, but when I came to Israel [from my native South Africa at age 26] I chose to live on a spot that was on the sea... [with my wife and] two young children. My first dive was in 1958; I went down to Eilat....The coral was very bright and colorful; it was really very unspoiled, very healthy. I've been diving ever since.... [I started] building [aquariums] around the world [after] a diving accident. I was on holiday, and my young son went diving very deep, deeper than he should, and I went to [save] him and that's when my eardrum burst. I couldn't dive for a few months. I realized that there [were] a lot of people who [never get to] see coral and the fish....[So] I built the underwater [aquarium] in Eilat, which... was very successful; then I built another two... in the Caribbean, one in Maui, one in Palma de Mallorca, and then we bought one in Australia.
