Japan looks like a slow-motion train wreck. I predicted in my book, The Age of Deleverag-ing, that this would occur in the next five to ten years as Japan's ability to finance its huge government debts internally comes to a grinding halt The tragic earthquakes and tsunami accelerated the crack-up. In the 1980s Japan's booming economy was feared and envied, but then its housing and stock bubbles collapsed and the rising sun faded into 20 years of malaise and deflation. In reaction government deficit spending jumped to 6% of GDP by the late 1990s while the U.S. budget was running surpluses. Government net debt leaped from 11% of GDP in 1991 to 121% in 2010 while gross debt, which includes intragovernmental loans, climbed to 227%.
