There are hundreds of electronic payment processors. At a minimum, be sure your provider has been deemed "PCI compliant" by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council. Processors have to earn their compliance every year by meeting stringent criteria, includ ing an annual on-site audit, a review of their internal security policy, simu lated attacks on their network (called penetration tests) and internal net work scans. (You might also ask for a gander at the processor's financials as proof of its financial stability.) You likely won't pay more for PCI compli ance, and you'll rest a lot easier. Visa offers a global registry of PCI-com pliant processors on its website.
