Remember when Joe Biden admonished us to keep spending or else we'd go bankrupt? Most people either charitably considered this a gaffe or lambasted it as evidence of political cluelessness. But Biden was very much in synch with mainstream economics in government, media and the academy. Many who consider manipulating markets as appropriate or esteem macroeconomics as legitimate thought him correct, if perhaps not as suave as they'd prefer. If s no wonder economics confuses people, but it need not be so intimidating. Economics studies the transformation of scarce resources into products that best satisfy our unlimited wants and needs.
