Global malaise That"s the best way to describe our current predicament The US. and other developed nations are dangerously overleveraged. Europe suffers from poor demographics and a weak currency structure. Great Britain and other European countries think fiscal and monetary austerity will fix things. It could make matters worse. Here in the U.S. total debt for domestic nonfinancial sectors as a percent of nominal GDP rose from under 140% in 1980 to over 240% today. Household debt relative to GDP has nearly doubled in the past three decades. Our ratio of gross debt to GDP stands at a stunning 99%.
