A few years ago, as he watched oil prices rise, Kaiser found himself frustrated. "We have almost universal support for reducing our dependence on foreign oil," he says. But for almost 40 years now "there's been no progress whatsoever on addressing, analyzing and espousing solutions for our energy dependency."Political unrest in authoritarian regimes across the Middle East could make it worse. Unrest in Libya pushed up oil prices by $20 a barrel. Multiply that across the 80 million-plus barrels of crude the world burns through daily and it's an extra $1.2 billion a day tacked on to the global fuel bill.
