The brouhaha over general stanley mcchrystal under-scores that President Obama is making a profound mistake in Afghanistan. Pressured and pilloried by the extreme left of his party, the President last year procrastinated in responding to our military's request to boost troop levels in Afghanistan. Additional "boots on the ground" were needed as part of an effort to achievernthe kind of strategic turnaround there that had been accomplished with the surge in Iraq. The President finally made the decision to increase our forces by 30,000 soldiers (instead of the requested 40,000). But to appease the left, he proclaimed we would make significant troop withdrawals from Afghanistan in mid-2011.
