The Securities & Exchange Commission is on a rampage about bringing more "transparency and accountability to all corners of the marketplace," as its new chairman, Mary L. Schapiro, put it. She might start with her own.rnHer last job was as chief executive officer of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the entity that regulates stock brokerages and stockbrokers. An employee there for 13 years, she's getting a pension buyout she hasn't specified yet, except to state in government ethics disclosures that it's somewhere between $5 million and $25 million. Imagine the SEC allowing a com-rnpany to say its profits could have been $5 a share-or $25. Schapiro, 53, might have the distinction of being the country's highest-paid financial regulator in 2008. Besidesrnpension accruals, her salary and incentive compensation at Finra was $2.75 millioa That's a doubling over the $1.38 million she pulled down in 2004-during a period in which Finra missed Bernard Madoff s apparent $50 billion Ponzi fraud. (Schapiro has said Finra didn't regulate the investment side of Madoff's business.) Then throw in $860,000 for long-term service on the board of Kraft Foods.
