Why pay for a pack of professional journalists when you can get by with gifted amateurs? Established in February 2000 by former investigative magazine journalist Yeon Ho Oh, OhmyNews is South Koreas grand experiment in citizen journalism. It was touted by organizations from the BBC to Time magazine as the future of the media industry. OhmyNews proposed to publish stories from thousands of "citizen reporters" writing on everything from politics to the arts to daily life. They would be paid a modest fee for their work and be supported by a lean, professionally trained editing staff. Oh dubbed the hybrid model "responsible participation." The bet: OhmyNews could create a virtuous cycle of more readers and more news leading to enough revenues to sustain itself. Instead, OhmyNews is learning a tough lesson about making numbers work. Readers abound: The flagship Korean site racks up an average of 2.5 million page views a day, placing OhmyNews in the top 30 traffic generators among Korean Web sites, according to Jean K. Min, communications director for OhmyNews' internationalrndivision. More than 70,000 citizens contribute to the Korean site and 6,000 write for its English-language sister site, OhmyNews International. They earn $2 for every news story OhmyNews accepts and bonuses for popular stories. OhmyNews also employs about 65 writers and editors.
