Santa Catarina and Espirito Santo are situated on Brazil's south and southeastern coasts and have benefited economically from their locations.rnSanta Catarina, which is about the size of the state of Indiana with a similar-size population of 5 million, is a major industrial and agricultural center and has one of the highest standards of living in the country. Espirito Santo is only half its size, but encompasses some of Brazil's busiest ports.rnAlthough Portuguese fishermen first settled Santa Catarina, the next immigrants to arrive were German and Italian, and influences of all three cultures remain. The state's character is enriched by colonial architecture, fishing villages and traditional craft businesses such as lace making.
