The average hedge fund lost 18% last year, and one in seven shut its doors, according to Chicago's Hedge Fund Research. The end of the industry's golden age, though, has not come evenly. Our third annual scorecard of Wall Street's Highest Earners, which measures bankers, buyout artists and hedge and mutual fund operators, shows that the 20 most successful money managers-this year all hedge fund operators-still made an average of $515 million in 2008. How did they do it? Mainly by shorting the financial and energy sectors and betting on takeovers.
