Wood turning is not a craft for the impatient. When done right-and Philip Moulthrop wouldn't do it any other way-transforming hunks of trees into poetry requires time: up to eight months for a large bowl in a hard stock like oak or cherry. "You can take pieces of the wood away, but you can't put them back," he explains. To make a single bowl, he spends as long as 12 hours at his lathe over several weeks or months, carefully shaping the wood with customized tools, then applies five layers of finish. The result gleams as if it were polished stone, showcasing a tree's lines like veins through time.
