摘要

It's pretty involved for something that holds your cuffs together," admits Sawyer, a Minneapolis goldsmith and self-taught master of mokume, the extraordinarily complex Japanese metalwork technique that gives samurai swords their fascinating whorls and these cuff links their roiled-ocean surface. Making mokume (wood grain metal) requires him to layer precious metals, flatten each stack between rollers, repeatedly fold and forge the sandwich with a hammer and anvil intornthumbprint-like swirls, and then slice off sheets and shape them into jewelry. Coming up on 40 years at the workbench, Sawyer, whose first job was in a shop that built Le Mans Formula 1 cars for Ford, still has a Midwestern hobbyist's giddy enthusiasm: "The technique is fun," he says.
