Clothes make the man, but in this case, one man makes the clothes-on a foot-powered, 60-year-old knitting machine. Cruciani, which specializes in superfine cashmere knitwear, has five of these anachronisms, each handled by one artisan. It takes a year to learn to operate the machine and 40 hours to make one intarsia vest. The technique is more akin to carpet weaving than knitting, and indeed, the vest (100 percent cashmere) has the feel of plush pile and the vividly defined patterning of a handmade rug. That Cruciani makes such a one-off is natural given that its owner, Arnaldo Caprai, has a passion for textile history. He has amassed the world's foremost collection of antique lace-more than 22,000 pieces and counting-which he keeps at company headquarters in Foligno,just outside Perugia. The same building houses D.O.C., Cruciani's outlet store (50 percent discount) for its knitwear and table linens.
