Flannel"has been married to "gray" since 1955, the year The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit was published. Since then, the couple has been shorthand for postwar conformity, unbridled corporate striving, and almost everything else we don't like about the 1950s. But forget the freighted legacy of Sloan Wilsons novel, and think of flannel in material terms. It is actually man's best friend, an icon of cool-weather stylishness and relaxed elegance. Its forte, avers menswear designer Alan Flusser in Dressing the Man, is "exuding that slightly worn-in old-money look associated with genteel taste." What could be more appropriate now, when "consumption" is being linked daily with its old reprobate consort, "conspicuous"?
