To see a beautiful piece of sartorial engineering, ask to have a look at a French-faced sport coat or suit jacket the next time you're shopping for dress clothes. Notice that the interior front panels are lined (or faced) in the same fabric used to make the jacket, and that there's one usual ingredient missing: the interior Bemberg lining, which in a standard jacket seems to hold the garment together. To the untrained eye, French-faced construction may appear to cut corners when, in fact, it is more complicated, more costly, and more labor-intensive than customaryjacket tailoring.
