They scoffed when Indian industrialist Ratan Tata announced his plan to build a car that would cost 100,000 rupees—about $2,500 at today's exchange rate. Auto executives—the ones who spend more than that for each of their dark suits—called him crazy. Tata sketched his brainchild for FORBES last year and called it "a new definition of low-cost." And on Jan. 10 he planned to unveil the little egg-shaped car in New Delhi, a week before Detroit shows off midsize sedans with an average price tag ten times that of the mini Tata's.
