Municipal bonds got caught in the credit crunch, along with most things fixed income. Of course, munis have little to do with subprime mortgages, the source of all the misery. But hedge funds and other leveraged players dumped muni bonds to raise cash and meet margin calls. Combine weak demand with heavy issuance (a record $428 billion in 2007), and you get falling prices.
