Frank J. mitsch knows all about the periodic table, how acids react with alcohols and at what temperature mercury freezes. A chemical engineer by trade, he spent many years amid the acrid atmosphere of petrochemical plants. Less than fondly, he recalls a late-1980s visit to a French pigment factory where the air was thick with powder laced (he suspects) with toxic heavy metals. "I think that one shaved a few years off my life," he says.
