"Bad Medicine" (Mar. 10, p. 86) misses a central issue: that the ability of hospitals to serve their community is threatened when physicians steer patients to facilities they own. The practice, self-referral, leaves community hospitals in the lurch. The article dismissed extensive research showing that self-referral drives up health care costs and is anticompetitive. Over time this can dismantle the health care safety nets that communities depend on.
