Peter claydon and doug r. Pulley were sitting in the Salamander, a pub in Bath, England, in 2004 complaining, as a lot of people do, about cell phones: haphazard sound quality, dropped calls, slow downloads, annoying delays between speaking and being heard. But Claydon, 45, and Pulley, 41, unlike a lot of people, knew how to do something about their ale-fueled gripes. The idea: Shrink those gigantic cell phone towers into teeny-tiny boxes and stick one in every home or office that wants better reception. The idea seemed kooky when they broached it. But the two men, who four years earlier had cofounded Picochip, a semiconductor firm in Bath, soon convinced each other that it was not only possible but also inevitable.
