Since Jan. 1 split-adjusted shares of Mainland Resources have risen 40,000% to a recent $5.24, for a $138 million market cap. The latest financials show no revenue, an accumulated deficit and maybe two employees. The youthful energy company-which says variously that it was founded either in 2006 or this year-recently relocated from Vancouver, B.C. to Houston. Especially in Germany, where its shares are also listed, Mainland has been talking up its stake in a northwestern Louisiana gas field dominated by giant Chesapeake Energy. Last month Mainland raised $4 million in a private placement offering that sold units covering two shares of stock for $1, implying a value far below the current market level.
