A tiresome side effect of China's rise in recent years is the corresponding rise in books and experts explaining how to make money there. That would be fine if each one offered startling new insights, but everyone has the same few things to say about China: about "human capital," about the importance of "saving face," about the treacherous complexity of the place that obviously makes their books required reading. Indeed, the safest China play may be selling this story line, as Ted C. Fishman showed with China Inc. (Scribner, 2005), a cleverly packaged synthesis of mostly off-the-shelf information that in 2005 helped prove there was a market for cookie-cutter business books with "China" or "dragon" in the title. Making money from actually doing business in China is a trickier prospect. Serious investors and entrepreneurs would do well to consider an earlier spate of books about how to lose money in China, most notably Tim Clissold's Mr. China: A Memoir (HarperCollins, 2005), a British businessmans story of the quixotic and astoundingly costly misadventures led by his boss, an American investment banker who had never set foot in China before deciding to make a fortune there.
