Your recent cover story "Power Putsch" (June 2, p. 84) does not accurately reflect AES' long-term plans in Kazakhstan because it leaves the impression that we are exiting the country. This is simply not the case. We remain committed to serving this market and will continue to own and operate two thermal and two hydropower plants in Kazakhstan, with a total capacity of approximately 2,688 megawatts, as well as a distribution business with more than 400,000 customers. We will receive up to $381 million over a three-year period to manage and operate the facilities being acquired by Kazakhmys. It is not unusual for AES or any other large multinational company to sell assets, as we are doing in Kazakhstan and other parts the world. We take an active approach to managing our portfolio; the $1.4 billion from the sale and operating agreement will help fund our global development pipeline, including expansion in renewable energy.
