When he was in congress Richard Baker was a strong proponent of forcing hedge funds to open their books and end their secretive ways. He even sponsored the Hedge Fund Disclosure Act of 1999, which sought to register fund managers with the Securities & Exchange Commission. Now he doesn't believe in any of that, nor a measure, which passed a House committee last month, to hike taxes on hedge fund managers by $50 billion over a decade. All this could have a little something to do with the fact that Baker is now head of the Managed Funds Association. This is the main lobby for the $1.9 trillion hedge fund business, counting among its members Fortress Investment Group, Paulson & Co. and Soros Fund Management.
