Fallen hedge fund manager Nicholas Maounis is plotting his return, two years after his Amaranth Advisors LLC shut its doors following a $6.6 billion loss, mostly generated in one spectacular week from bad bets by a single trader on natural gas prices. Later this year-and without that trader-Maounis, 44, plans to open Verition Fund Management LLC, also located in Greenwich, Conn. He's raised $200 million, much of it from ex-clients who, despite Amaranths collapse, apparently got back most of their original investments.
