Peter semmelhack thinks the $170 billion consumer electronics business is out of whack. Consumers have no power. Manufacturers like Apple and Sony sell us what they want to sell, and we're supposed to keep our wallets open and our minds closed. "We've been trained to believe that gadgets come from big companies, which is a fallacy," says Semmelhack.rnSemmelhack, 42, founded a company called Bug Labs two years ago to shift power toward the average Joe, or at least a Joe with programming skills. In March Bug Labs, in New York, began selling an assortment of white, 2.5-inch-square hardware modules that snap into its portable Linux computer, the Bugbase, to create almost any gadget you can think up. Bug sells a GPS module, a camera, a motion sensor and a touchscreen. Ten new modules are in the pipeline including a keyboard and a SIM card reader.
