Embracing the country's long tradition of superstition, thousands of Chinese couples chose the day of the opening ceremonyrnof the Beijing Summer Olympics-the eighth day of the eighth month of the year '08-to register their marriages. The filings, however, embrace another tradition, too: the triumph of hope over statistics. Divorce, rare during the country'srnMaoist era, is rising rapidly in China.rnThe number of uncontested divorces that couples registered with the government increased by 18% last year, to 1.4 million. The same year saw 9.5 million marriages. Divorce is now sorncommon in big cities like Shanghai that one of five new couples there includes at least one retread spouse.
