Reshma shetty thinks an empty-looking circle on a plain piece of paper could change the world. Inside the circle, given away by its small helical pattern, is a smear of DNA dried onto its surface. If you cut out a tiny piece of the circle, a chad if you will, and drop it into a vial of bacteria, which you then chill, feed and warm up for an hour-presto!-you've got glowing red bacteria. Or E. coli that smell like bananas. Or maybe a substitute for gasoline. Or a cure for cancer. It all depends on what DNA you use.rnThese white paper sheets, printed with detailed instructions, are the key to a company, Ginkgo Bio Works, formed by Shetty with three fellow MIT Ph.D.s andrntheir mentor, the computer-genius-turned-biologist Thomas Knight.
