Saul griffith restlessly taps his bare feet beneath a big table cluttered with books and models of wings and inflatable helmets. The bearded Australian with a Ph.D. in programmable assembly and nanotechnology is perched in his workshop, an aircraft control tower at an abandoned naval station across the bay from San Francisco.rnGriffith, a recipient of a 2007 MacArthur "genius" award, is at the center of many strands in the do-it-yourself movement. In 2004 he cofounded a consultancy called Squid Labs, which has spun out the how-to Web site Instructables, run by his MIT colleague Eric Wilhelm, and a firm called Makani Power, which got $10 million in 2006 from Google to look into making electricity by harnessing high-altitude winds with wing-shaped kites. He's also a son-in-law to Tim O'Reilly (seep. 80).
