On Friday, September 26, there was a line on Sixth Avenue at 18th Street in Manhattanrnthat went around the corner and stretched a long way westward. The Dow had gone up 200 points the day before on optimism about the bailout, but glimpsing the scene from a cab, I was sure the line was a bank run-a Depression-era photograph come to life. In fact, it turned out to be customers waiting to get into an Hermes sample sale.
