When his 26 unbuilt con-dominiums sold out in two hours on a day in 2003, Kirk Hanna, owner of Collins Lake Resort on Oregon's Mount Hood, should have been thrilled. He had defied the grim predictions of Realtors, bankers and neighbors by building the first such housing in the area. Instead, he panicked. Getting $200,000 for each of the 1,250-square-foot homes, Hanna barely managed to cover expected construction costs, to say nothing of a $2 million loan for the land. "Things were very tense," Hanna recalls.
