Two australian flags flapped against the dark sky. the 20mph wind inflated my rain poncho like a sail. Some 400 feet above Sydney Harbour, on a catwalk connecting two spans at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, my safety seemed dicey. Through a thin-mesh catwalk I watched the car lights below. The Australian approach to life can be summed up by the Sydney Harbour BridgeClimb: Oz is an outdoor country in love with risk. The bridge was completed in 1932, when 30% of the nation's workforce had no work. During better times, in the late 1980s, Paul Cave cooked up the idea of the BridgeClimb. For nine years he worked to overcome government objections. Climbers would distract drivers? Then outfit them in steel-colored jumpsuits. Too many climbers fueled by liquid courage? Turn away those who fail a Breathalyzer test.
